Lavoslav Schwarz Old age ( Foundation ) Home is the oldest social institution of the Jewish Community Zagreb. It is located at 55, Bukovačka cesta in immediate vicinity of the Maksimir Park. It was named after one of the greatest Zagreb benefactor and Maecenas who incorporated a foundation home for building and maintenance of the Home for “frail old men and women".

Tradition of one hundred years confirms that taking care of older people is an important value to the Jewish Community Zagreb and it has been provided to them with high quality from the start.

Burdensome history of the Jewish community and the Lavoslav Schwarz Old age Home shows that we are always dedicated to the idea of solidarity and support in hard times and the idea of Lavoslav Schwarz has not faded for over a century – taking care of a community and those in need is still one of the fundamental guidelines of the Jewish Community Zagreb.

Background of the Lavoslav Schwarz Old age ( Foundation ) Home

Leopold / Lavoslav Schwarz ( 1837 - 1906 ), tradesman and lease holder, philanthropist was one of the greatest benefactors of the Jewish Community Zagreb. In his testament dated May 4, 1905 he left in legacy of 400,000 krones for building and maintenance of the “Home for frail and older people” under the name "Lavoslav Schwarz Foundation Home". The building was designed and built by architects and member of the Jewish Community Leo Honigsberg and Julio Deutsch and it was opened in 1909 at 63, Maksimirska Street. Ustashas confiscated the building in 1941 by Ustashas government and nationalized in 1948. In 1954, the City of Zagreb allocated a land at 55, Bukovačka cesta and the Jewish community financed building of the Lavoslav Schwarz Foundation Home again.
